Dear Kaio Zeki,
We are devoted Kaio fans. (We also enjoy your good friend,
Chiyotaikai zeki. Have a drink with him for us!)
We are two retired university professors, who are sports
illiterates
except for Sumo. We might be the only Sumo followers in Ames,
Iowa,
but that's OK.
Best wishes in the Kyuushu Basho,
Motoko and Chuck Oulman

Kaio couldn’t reach 10th win; it was a difficult and
challengeable basho for Kaisei; Kainomiya did “isamiashi”
because he was too eager to get 6th wins… However, nobody was
injured and finished this basho. We are glad that everybody
pursued all their bouts without having any major accidents…

Many rikishi are confused by “tachiai…”, but it is really a rule
of sumo… so, now they should make sure of the basic rule of
Tachiai!

Hello:
I want you to know that many of us foreign fans of Ozumo have
noticed that the Rikishi of Tomozuna-Beya have not been
implicated in any of the various problems Sumo has been
experiencing lately.
Perhaps it is partially due to the "Openness" that Tomozuna
promotes.
The more communication, visitation, and in general being "on
display" , the tougher it becomes to hide any sort of
unacceptable behavior or any participation in unacceptable
activities. Perhaps other beyas should take a tip from
Tomozuna-beya.
Running a more open beya such as Tomozuna is a good way to
reduce the environment that allows deviant behavior to occur in
the shadows.
Best Regards,
Doug DeShong

Rengo-keiko was
held yesterday and today.
Now… we are very sorry for the series of affairs…
Tomozuna-oyakata is much busier lately…
Our rikishi concentrate on their own duties and on their keiko
without making any objections.
We are all determined to maintain sumo as a Japanese tradition
and pass it down from generation to generation.

We received a
message from Asa and Juan who visited our heya to watch keiko on
31st.
We are pleased that they had a good time.
We just wanted to thank you again for giving us the wonderful
opportunity of watching keiko. We had an amazing time!!!
This definitely will be a highlight of our trip and and an
experience we will never forget. It also gave us a greater
appreciation of sumo wrestling -- Juan was really awed by the
amount and difficulty of training the wrestlers do during their
morning keiko (and I think he now dreams of being one himself!)
and I was amazed by their flexibility and strength. Thank you
again.
